Rhythm: Grouping Exercises

All grouping exercises superimpose 3, 5- and 7-note groups on single bars. The five-note groups are divided into 2+5, the seven-note groups are divided into 2+2+3. The upper voice includes the subdivisions, the lower voice consists only of the resulting accents. Learn both separately.

  1. Practice the rhythms with Konnakol.
  2. Clap the rhythm while counting the beats out loud.
  3. Improvise on the rhythms on your instrument. Don’t just play an ostinato, but play freely on a chord progression.
